Maybe Hillary and Obama should flip a coin?

OK - I know your first reaction is what a stupid idea. But the idea sounds better the more you compare it to everything else.

The election is tied, and it’s going to stay tied. What do I mean by tied? If there are different legitimate ways to count the vote and that determines who wins then it’s tied. Without FL and MI Obama wins. With them Hillary wins. And then there’s the super delegates. I’m still waiting for Obama to demand that Kennedy and Kerry vote for Hillary.

In a tied race no matter who wins the other side will be pissed off and McCain will be president. I don’t think there’s any way that you can determine the outcome of this election and unite the party. So do you want Hillary to lose to McCain or Obama to lose to McCain?

But - if you flip a coin it all goes away. People will respect a coin flip as fair in a tied vote. Winner gets to run for president, loser get to be the VP. So it will be either Clinton/Obama or Obama/Clinton.

The bottom line is, both sides really like their candidate. So let’s have both sides win. This flip could be the most televised event in the histor of the world. Everyone would be watching. And whoever wins goes on to slaughter McCain. The super delegates don’t have to piss off half the party. FL and MI don’t have to have new elections. It’s the easy way out. And Democrats like the easy way out.

So - the coin flip idea is like fine wine. It needs to age in your brain to be appreciated. Many elections are resolved by flipping a coin. So if you like this idea, spread the word and blog about it.

I’m not ready for coin flipping. I think that Obama has some real problems right now and I think Hillary is on her way past the 50% mark - not because of Obama’s problems, but because now her strengths have an opportunity to be properly assessed.

Sadly I think this primary has left real divisions between key voting blocks in the Democratic party and unless the DNC gets it shit together, this will be a debacle in November.

So, no coin flipping right now. I think the dust has to be allowed to settle in the next 3 months.

I think Obama is melting. We’ll see how he weathers this storm, but it’s quite possible that by summer there will be a party consensus that he’s unelectable. That’s what happened with Gary Hart.
