Three weeks without a computer has provided a much needed respite from the soul-shattering experience that has been this year’s election. I spent a lifetime under the misapprehension that people wanted to know the unvarnished truth about current events, and thirsted for access to that information. I was wrong. Dead wrong. What I have found out is that, in reality,
Most of the peopleWANT TO BE FOOLEDmost of the time.
Political winners are those who do the best job of fooling the most people. They are the best manipulators. I can never be one of them. Despite my newfound knowledge, I still don’t have such a low opinion of my fellow citizens to be inclined to use immoral, Machiavellian tactics against them. So for as long as I can stomach it, I will continue to offer my best understanding of what is happening to the 10 or 12 of you who prefer to live in the reality-based community.—CaroLinda Tripp Praises Obama’s ‘Purity of Soul’ (Women on the Web)[B]ack in time it was Linda Tripp who famously taped her then-“friend” Monica Lewinsky relaying her titillating adventures with the president. Interested in hearing what Tripp had to say of the recent election (yes, she’s a week late in returning our e-mail), Tripp relayed the following thoughts: “I am so very proud that as a nation we might finally be getting it right. I believe Sen. McCain is an American hero and a deeply honorable public servant, something one seldom sees in Washington. I also believe he could have been a strong president. That said, I believe President-elect Obama possesses an instantly recognizable purity of soul that, coupled with his brilliance, and, of course, his eloquence, brought quite unimaginable and long-awaited magic to the country, transforming red and blue states, quite literally, into ‘The Color Purple.’ I believe the entire country will stand behind him.”If I remember correctly (it’s been a while), The Color Purple was in large part an indictment of black men for how they have treated black women. Now, all American women are getting to experience that treatment. You gotta love it or you’re a racist.—CaroKurtz questions media’s “hyperventilating” over ObamaNews orgs are cranking out Barack Obama DVDs, books, commemorative issues, and adoring cover stories. “Media outlets have always tried to make a few bucks off the next big thing,” writes Howard Kurtz. “The endless campaign is over, and there’s nothing wrong with the country pulling together, however briefly, behind its new leader. But we seem to have crossed a cultural line into mythmaking.”Yes, and they did the same with George Bush. Remember how well THAT worked out.—CaroRove’s View of How Obama Won (by Jake Tapper at Political Punch, ABC News)“Q: Do you see the election results as a repudiation of your politics?“A: ‘Our new president-elect won one and a half-points more than George W. Bush won in 2004, and he did so, in great respect, by adopting the methods of the Bush campaign and conducting a vast army of persuasion to identify and get out the vote.’” — Karl Rove in the Sunday New York Times Magazine, November 11, 2008I’m pretty sure I don’t agree with this assessment. What do you think?I do agree with it. And not just with the GOTV aspect. I also agree that the Obama campaign engendered the same kind of hate generating techniques as Bush’s campaigns.—CaroObama Leaves Senate (Political Wire)President-elect Obama resigned from the U.S. Senate today and published a letter to constituents in many Illinois newspapers. An excerpt: “Today, I am ending one journey to begin another. After serving the people of Illinois in the United States Senate — one of the highest honors and privileges of my life — I am stepping down as senator to prepare for the responsibilities I will assume as our nation’s next president. But I will never forget, and will forever be grateful, to the men and women of this great state who made my life in public service possible.”He never did one damn thing for the people of Illinois who elected him to represent us.—CaroClick here for more politics and media news headlines.Carolyn KayMakeThemAccountable.com
